"For the Beauty of the Earth"
- Rev. Ben Bortin
June 8 at 10:30
“Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it.
The ages have been at work on it, and we can only mar it.”
So said Long Islander, Teddy Roosevelt,
when he first viewed the Grand Canyon.
We have inherited a priceless treasure, known as the planet earth.
We also have acquired the ability, alas, to mar it irreparably,
especially in this age of climate change.
Today, an invitation to safeguard and to celebrate our home, aka the earth.

"The Torch of Freedom"
- Rev. Ben Bortin
May 25 at 10:30
Ours is a distinctive religious approach.
Instead of a fixed theological creed, we affirm broad principles
like human dignity, free inquiry, respect for differences,
the search for truth, ethical action, and love.
Unitarianism was officially founded in this country
two hundred years ago to the day, May 25th , 1825.
Today we will examine and celebrate some highlights of our
two hundred year history, and remind ourselves of some central
cherished values, that amid our diversity, we hold in common.

"On Welcoming the Stranger"
Rev. Ben Bortin
February 23 at 10:30
Hostility toward the immigrant population in this country has led to the current irrational and fearful
policy of mass deportation. Many of us are particularly concerned about immigrant children,
and the possibility, as happened before in this country, of forced separation from their parents.
The vast majority of undocumented immigrants, far from being violent criminals, are hard-working,
tax paying residents of our society, whose aspirations are like those of their neighbors,
earning a decent living and supporting their families. Our country relies on their essential work.
But this issue is also a moral and religious one. A measure of who we are as a people hinges on
how we treat human beings, including newcomers and immigrants, and whether we offer
them the respect and dignity that is everybody's due.

Rev. Ben Bortin

That's what Cole Porter asked in 1929.
It's our Valentine service.
There are various examples and valid ideas about what love is.
But I'll say this much about it - it's the most joyous experience in life.
